Adyar River Flood Inundation Map

Flood inundation mapping for a site area falling in villages of Manapakkam, Gerugambakkam, Kulapakkam and Tharapakkam located along Adyar River

Project Description

The project entails developing flood inundation maps for the years 2005, 2015, and 2017, targeting a 645-acre area adjacent to villages along the Adyar River. This included identifying flood-prone areas and categorizing them based on inundation severity (high, medium, and low). Subsequently, recommendations were provided for measures to mitigate flood impacts within the study area thereby improving resilience.

Key Highlights

The detailed study advocates for integrating three principal approaches: (1) Engineering Approach - focusing on enhancing drainage infrastructure, (2) Urban Planning Approach - emphasizing zoning and development controls to minimize flood exposure, and (3) Risk Mitigation Approach - aimed at reducing flood vulnerability through strategic adaptation measures. The project also involved extensive stakeholder consultations and outreach programs with relevant government departments to facilitate informed decision-making and collaborative action.

These recommendations are proposed for consideration by CMDA in the upcoming Third Master Plan.
